Sergeant Major
Martin Phillips
Another
long time servant of the regiment clocking up his twenty years service medal
just a few Whitehalls ago. Has steadily risen through the ranks from Pikeman in
the early seventies to gain his lofty position of Sergeant Major and soon to be
Commanding Officer when George decides it's knocking off time at the end of the
year.
Martin is renowned throughout the regiment, indeed the society, for his singing ability, and he always sends his fans into fever pitch when the first glorious words of 'Roundway Down' are uttered to assembled hordes. Fortunately his singing sometimes destroys his voice for the drill the following day and he is often heard croaking out commands much to the amusement of those regiments he is supposed to be in charge of.
More importantly Martin has been a constant supplier to the society of major and minor musters throughout the Dorset and Devon areas, indeed this year Hopton's are hosting a large R.I.E. at Lytchett Minster in which the subject of this page is yet again the Organiser.
We are also indebted to this great man for his interpretation of the trials and tribulations of the original Lord Hopton's regiment by being possibly the only man alive to have read Bellum Civile and more importantly understood the damn thing. The newsletter carried the articles for about 3 years but he is constantly spreading rumours that he is going to put it all together one day into an easy to read booklet so that mere mortals may too be of better understanding.
As if this mighty man doesn't do enough he is also (I think) the current chairman of the Kings Army Council of War which naturally takes up more weekends than most people give credit for, fortunately nowadays he is married to Cathy ( a Lunsford drummer, but there you go!) who is also is on the C.O.W. as treasurer, so at least the driving can be shared!
