Newsletter Number 84
August 2004
From The
Guv’nor
Dear
All,
Once again it seems to be my turn to write a few
words for the newsletter. It would be nice to see other officers doing
their bit for the newsletter either by e-mail or by the old fashioned way - pen
and paper! Pippy would even be pleased to take dictation over the phone.
So far we seem to have had a very busy season with a
few more events to come.
Unfortunately, Margaret and I were unable to make it
but I understand from all those that did go, despite the long journey and the
cost, a good time was had by all.
Wedding/Stoke Canon
Congratulations to Robin and Jenny on their marriage
and we all wish them every happiness for the future. Our thanks to them
both for a very enjoyable evening.
Although Stoke Canon turned out to be a very wet muster and the pub ran out of beer I believe everybody had a reasonably good time. My thanks to Nigel for taking Concorde to Stoke Canon.
Gurney Slade (Dodger's
week-end)
It's a shame more poeple couldn't attend as it
turned out to be a very relaxed and laid back week-end. The weather was
absolutely fabulous and there was plenty of the amber nectar flowing. The
only call on the Regiment was a small drill display at the village fete.
Many thanks to Roger and Christina for making everyone so welcome.
Staveley
Not much to say about this event except that it was
very wet and cold. The battlefield was very hilly and not much action but
still quite enjoyable. 'H' and Sue from Lunsfords put on a very good beer
tent which proved to be very welcome. Due to the fact that we only had
about eight members from Hopton's Alice, alias Bob, was promoted to Sergeant of
Musket - "loved the voice"!
Oakwell Hall
Although this was a very long trek up North it was
well worth the journey as the house was absolutely beautiful. The battles
on both days proved to be different - it's the first time I have fought a battle
in a bog with grass and thistles up to my neck. However, the beer barn
turned out to be excellent with a good selection of beers and a selection of
drinks for those who don't like beer!
Margate
Our next event will be at Margate and I hope to
see a few more bodies there. From reading the warning order it seems like
it could be good fun.
This is a major muster and it would be nice if we
could have a really good turnout.
This particular week-end is my wedding anniversary and Margaret and I would like the regiment to help us celebrate by joining us for drinks and nibbles on the Saturday evening in the party tent - the drinks are on us. See you there.
Yours in loyalty
George
Editorial
Welcome to another edition of your
newsletter and I must immediately offer apologies if you think it’s a little
later than usual, this is due to a variety of reasons, the main one being the
old chestnut of not backing up vital files before the famous ol’ hard disc
failure of April 2004. Secondary reasons for the delay are numerous but probably
best summed up by using the well worn out excuse of writers block..
I reckon Berwick was another good un,
plenty of action for a goodly number of people who made the long trek into the
heathen district of Nearpickland the weekend was blighted by good weather which
made drinking (when available) all the more easier, it was well organised and
enjoyable. All in all an excellent start to what looks like being a good season.
Sorry I couldn’t make ‘the wedding’ or Grants
bash at Stoke Canon but it sounded another superb weekend. I’m sure you’ll
agree that I made up for it at Dodger’s do the following weekend.
Staveley Hall followed and
unfortunately was not well attended by Hopton’s. I’ll not repeat here what I
know will follow.
Oakwell Hall has also come and gone. I
didn’t attend and don’t know how it all went, I hope that those that did
make it had a good time. I actually had a fantastic time with Sir Marmaduke
Rawdon’s Regiment at the Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Cross for a change of
scenery.
Coming soon is the bash at Margate
though you should have received orders some time ago for that particular little
adventure, I won’t be making that one either I’m afraid so I’ll see you
all at Pulham, Audley End or Corfe a little later in the year.
Hopefully by now everybody has paid
their dues to the regiment and the society, if not Dodger will be dispatched
with immediate affect complete with miniature acid bath kit and tooth
extractors.

Forthcoming
Events
Listed below are the events made
available to me from various sources, they may not be complete but that’s
because nobody has actually said anything different to me since the start of the

dory. Those fixtures in bold are the ones that we would encourage you to attend
as they are either Hopton’s events or Major Muster’s in the true sense of
the word.
