HISTORY MATTERS

www.historymatters.com

The National Trust launch this important campaign with a nationwide free public access day on Saturday 9th – this will have a very high media profile so we can expect extra visitors - this year we are the sole attraction for the whole weekend.  We look forward to the many and incredible offers we have recieved for additional living history attractions including – Mark’s beer brewing,  Psycho’s scrivening and Martin’s sports day are but some!

Can all soldiers and civilians who are by accident or design involved in a senario avoid speaking “ mummersetshire “ just be yourself , remember society was then very deferential  - do not over react and become very  “umble” just keep your eyes down and speak with respect to any person who is your social or military superior.

Our presentation in the Castle will have four main sections;

·       Gentry and officers

·       Common soldiers and military activity

·       Crafts/artisans/military support services,

·       Information /publicity and recruiting.

We are extremely grateful for the ECWS information tent team offering to attend – please note due to health reasons they are unable to erect the tent, which is our responsibility, please give them full assistance at all times.  This year we welcome  guests from the Shrewsbury Foot , please make them welcome and guide them through the requirements we need to ensure the public in the village and campsite area  are not disturbed by our presence.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

·       Please respect National Trust staff at all times with any requests they may make.  If there are any problems brought to your attention by them please report it to an Officer.  The top part of the Castle is closed to everyone due to unsafe masonry.  Please  remember this is a scheduled monument.

·       The National Trust, Police & Trading Standards  will insist on all licenses being up to date both for powder and firearms as per our societies rules.  There will be no exceptions. All powder must be stored in the National Trusts  powder store..  Please pay special attention to the fact that firearms must only be discharged at the designated times. It is critical this is observed if we are to continue to have events here.

·       It is essential that HEALTH AND SAFETY guidelines are observed, especially where members of public are concerned and children.  Metal headed pikes should not be used during any contact with these groups.  Fires should be manned at all times and only cut where agreed by the warden.

·       The quality of this event is paramount, so please, authentic footwear is a must. No watches, coke cans, cigarettes etc.and if you must drink outside the Greyhound in the daytime please use an authentic vessel  or go out into the garden.

·       Please do not go into the Fox in costume. Go home quietly through the village, especially at night or when leaving the pub.

GUESTS AND OTHER RE-ENACTORS

This is a closed event for Hopton’s and invited guests only. If you wish to bring a member from another Kings Army Regiment please contact the muster organiser first. They must, if invited, be dressed as regimental soldiers, or provide an agreed  living history angle. Also we have had a problem at recent Corfe events with other costumed people turning up. Unless they are members of the regiment or an invited guest they are not insured.  If you spot such a person whilst on duty at the gate or elsewhere in the town please report it immediately to an Officer who can then verify their membership status.

TIMES

The Castle will be accessible for set up after the Castle closes at 5.30pm on the Friday and 8am on Saturday morning.  Please note that Vehicles must be out of the Castle on Saturday and Sunday by 9.30am at the latest.

Form up time will be in the West Street car park at 10.30am.

QUARTERS

Authentic camping in the Castle overnight is available. The campsite is as before, off the Church Knowle road; turn right past the visitor centre and before the Castle, it is on the left.  Please be careful on this section of road. Noise levels in the campsite must respect the fact that there is a National Trust holiday cottage and tenanted cottage  adjoining it.  It is important that we do not have any complaints from them regarding our use of their field as a campsite. Sorry no fires

There are many Hotels and B&B’s, lists from the National Trust 01929 481294

We look forward to seeing you all at Corfe Castle,  GOD BLESS LORD HOPTON
